This project took shape very slowly over a long time. I did not begin with a complete understanding of what had happened, or how all the pieces fit together. Part of the work was writing my way toward some kind of understanding of what I experienced.
Throughout the writing process I made deliberate and extensive efforts to protect the privacy of people who are not the subject of this project.
The project includes screenshots because the record matters. Given the seriousness of what is being described, I did not want to present only selected fragments or ask readers to rely solely on my interpretation. The screenshots are included for transparency and integrity, even when they are uncomfortable or unflattering to me.
At the same time, material involving third parties has been left out, redacted, obscured, reduced, or otherwise changed where possible to avoid unnecessary exposure.
When this project began, I did not yet know exactly what shape it would take, what direction it would go, or what the finished work would look like. Now that the project is complete, I have been able to review it in its entirety. After a final review, I made a few additional privacy-protective edits where further protection was possible without changing the substance of the story.
Those edits reflect the same commitment that has guided my work on the project from the beginning: tell the truth, show the record, and reduce unnecessary exposure for people who are not the focus of the work.
I know this project may be unsettling to some readers. It is also documented, carefully considered, and true. This project exists to show behavior, patterns, and harm that should not stay hidden simply because naming them is uncomfortable. It was made with intention, reflection, and a sustained effort to tell the truth without exposing more than the story required.
It is deeply unfortunate that one person’s actions can leave so many people affected by consequences they did not choose. When hidden things become visible, the results can be complicated. I have tried to meet that reality carefully, without letting the difficulty of telling the truth become a reason to keep it buried. As the story shows, honesty can be hard — and there are also moments where it is absolutely necessary.
What are the words you do not yet have?
Audre Lorde
What do you need to say?
What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own
until you will sicken and die of them,
still in silence?
