Harm is not simple. Accountability is not simple. But complexity is not an excuse. Trauma is not an excuse. Addiction is not an excuse. Loneliness is not an excuse. Poetry is not an excuse. Tenderness is not an excuse. A person can be wounded and still wound others. A person can be suffering and still be responsible for the choices they make. Violet had spent her entire life learning how to love people who suffered. She had also spent her entire life learning the cost of confusing love with protection from consequences.

Violet: Chapter 31 – Release the Ropes
Violet thought she had a small amount of experience with rope. It turned out she had very little understanding of how rope should actually be practiced. At first, that realization was humiliating. Then it became clarifying. She was not discovering that she disliked rope. She was discovering that she had barely been introduced to it. She was not looking for another Jerry. She was not looking for someone to take his place, or another man to explain this world to her.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 30 – The Gag With Her Name On It
Jerry answered in the language he knew how to use. “I have a gag with your name on it.” At another time, Violet might have read it as part of the game. In this context, it landed differently. She had talked. She had asked questions. She had reached outside him for information. And now the fantasy was silence.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 29 – Goodbye, Jack Stallings
She was thinking about the facts. She was tied up in a small house with two men. One of them had tied her. The other she did not really know. If either of them wanted to hurt her, there was almost nothing she could do. She did not believe danger was imminent, but her body suddenly understood the full extent of her vulnerability.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 28 – On the Pillows, Jerry
Jerry had taken advantage of her compassion and kindness, but that did not make compassion or kindness weaknesses. It did not make them flaws. It did not make her stupid. Nothing she had done gave him the right to treat her the way he did.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 27 – Four Roses, Jerry
She knew it in the carefulness of his phrasing. She knew it in what he chose not to say. She knew it in the way “regular partners” opened a door instead of closing one. Regular partners implied irregular partners. It implied categories. It implied a system. And Violet was only just now being told that system existed.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 26 – I’m Very Fragile, Jerry
Jerry had read what she sent. He had agreed that they would tell each other before sleeping with someone else. He had said he got STI testing every three months. He had acknowledged a little jealousy. He had initiated sex afterward, and the next day he had texted that he appreciated the conversation and looked forward to more of the same.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 25 – Get the Ropes Ready, Jerry
The conversation kept sliding from ordinary logistics into sexual charge, then back again, as if dinner, therapy, Cindy, and rope all belonged naturally in the same plan. By afternoon, Jerry pushed it further. “You don’t intend to go to therapy with panties on, do you?” He sent a gif of a man in a suit sitting on a bed tapping on his leg in a dominant “come” motion.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 24 – Kisses on Your Bruises
“Kisses on your bruises,” Jerry wrote. That landed differently. It was tender. It was flirtatious. It was exactly the kind of thing Violet wanted to hear from him when she was hurt and disappointed and missing the freedom she had just found. She answered in the same language. “Among other places.”
Violet & Jack: Chapter 23 – Let Me Ride, Jerry
The night had been intense, and the torn fabric had become part of the memory of it: the rope, the force, the sound, the suddenness, the way Jerry had ripped them off after tying her first. “You owe me a pair of panties.” Jerry did not answer right away. Three days later, he finally did. “I’m sure I can fix them with duct tape.”
Violet & Jack: Chapter 22 – Back to Jerry
The break had been Jerry’s suggestion, but she needed it too. She needed distance from the silence. From the guessing. From the way he moved close and then disappeared behind overwhelm. From the way every attempt at simple communication seemed to turn into another round of trying to understand him while he avoided being clear.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 21 – Basic Decency, Jerry
Jerry had said it was fair. He had said he thought they could have open, honest communication, even without answers. Violet wanted to believe him. She had not asked him to define the relationship. She had not asked him for commitment. She had asked him to talk to her.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 20 – No Games, Jerry
Jerry said he got overwhelmed with it all and just shut down. Violet said that if they talked it out, it would not be so overwhelming. Jerry said that if he had answers, they could talk it out. Violet told him that made no sense. Jerry said that was how he felt. Like he did not make any sense. She did not need him to make sense. She needed him not to play games with her.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 19 – Prove It, Jerry
The rope came out again. So did the blindfold. Violet had experienced most of this with Jerry before. That made a difference. The first time, everything had felt new. This time, there was anticipation, but also recognition. She knew the feel of the rope. She knew the vulnerability of being blindfolded. She knew the shift in his voice. But he also introduced something new, a spreader bar
Violet & Jack: Chapter 18 – Unlock the Door, Jerry
Violet had already told Jerry he made her feel safe. After sex, there was usually tenderness and quite often snacks of the bachelor variety - random junk food or candy. More often, they stayed close afterward, quiet and tangled together. Sometimes they talked. In the mornings, when they woke up, he would almost always press up against her and kiss the back of her shoulder. Sometimes they woke up wrapped tightly together in a sweaty cocoon.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 17 – Juggle the Plates Jerry
The possibility appealed to her because it felt light, not heavy. Sex with Jerry seemed like it could be playful and creative, a place where curiosity did not have to become commitment. There were things Violet had not explored before, and with him, it seemed like there might be room for that. There was chemistry, trust, imagination, and enough shared mischief to make her think they could have a lot of fun.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 16 – The Birthday Scene
Violet sarcastically mentioned that she was very patiently waiting for the birthday celebration to arrive. “I enjoy knowing that you’re waiting patiently!!” Jerry wrote. Then he added, “I still might need to tie you up.” “50 👋🍑 may take a bit.”
Violet & Jack: Chapter 15 – Thread the Needle
By January 22, Violet was exhausted. Then Jerry asked her to come over and thread a needle for him. Violet had no idea what he meant. She stared at the message for a moment, trying to decide whether he was being literal or making some kind of strange reference she was supposed to understand. With Jerry, either seemed possible. He could be playful, cryptic, oddly specific. He could say things that sounded like jokes until they weren’t, or like invitations until they turned out to be something else.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 14 – Distract Me, Jack Stallings
The night before had been intense: the delayed flight, the shower, the sex, the food, the hours of talking, the family histories, the website, the story draft, the name Jack Stallings. By morning, Violet was exhausted After that night, she found herself thinking of him more often as Jerry.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 13 – Jack and the Portal
By late December, the shape of things between Violet and Jack had changed. They were still talking, but not with the same constant rhythm they had fallen into early on. After the DUI disclosure, after the cancelled comedy show, after the night Violet had dropped his things off and hugged him goodbye, the connection had not ended, but it had loosened.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 12 – Solstice Jack Stallings
Violet knew she had set the boundary for a reason. But the texts kept coming, the connection kept softening, and one familiar December tradition made distance harder to hold.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 11 – Hope, Jack Stallings
For a little while, it had felt easy again. The weekend had left traces behind. His shirt on the floor. His vest forgotten. The warmth of him still in the bed, still in the room, still lingering in the ordinary morning-after details. Violet found his things and texted him. He answered later that morning. “I’d rather be in bed still.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 10 – Moving Jack Stallings
By Monday, the door Violet thought had only cracked open was already being pushed wider. The day before had been strange and tender and easy in ways she had not expected. Jack had come into her world a little more. He had spent a morning at church with her. He had eaten with her, come to her house, napped beside her, sat with her at sunset.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 9 – Welcome Jack Stallings
Violet did not initiate contact after the gazebo. On Wednesday, Jack sent her a face-in-the-clouds emoji. She responded, and the conversation continued. On Thursday, he reached out again. “I dislike rainy Thursdays when it’s dark at 5 o’clock.” Then he asked, “Interested in talking later?”
Violet & Jack: Chapter 8 – Answer Jack Stallings
The next morning, before dawn, she texted him. “I like when you sing sad songs to me.” She liked the way his sadness came through music. She liked the way he seemed to carry something bruised and beautiful inside him. She liked the songs he chose, and the way he sang them to her like he was giving her access to some hidden room in himself.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 7 – Dinner and a Sunset
By the time Violet drove toward the park where they had planned to watch the sunset, she was nervous. Not in a warning-bell way. In a body way. The kind of nerves that came from anticipation, uncertainty, attraction, and the knowledge that the last few days had shifted something between them.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 6 – Before the Sunset
The sermon, the credo, the couch, the kissing, the groping, the way he had asked to hold her before she read the closest thing she had to a personal theology — all of it still lingered. Violet could feel the previous night moving around inside her, not as one clear thing but as pieces she kept turning over.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 5 – Articles of Faith
The morning after the election, Violet sent Jack a picture of a tiny penis figurine that she kept on her desk at work. “Here’s a dick pic to cheer you up.” The election still sat heavy over everything. Jack replied hours later with a heart reaction and, later that evening, a selfie accompanied by an apology.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 4 – See Jack Stallings
When Jack invited her to an election night gathering — and when she realized she didn’t have the energy to drive across town — she asked him to pick her up. He said yes immediately. They had barely left her neighborhood when the car’s Bluetooth lit up with an incoming call.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 3 – Acceleration
After their second date on October 29, they continued texting late into the night. Jack sent a photo of two fried eggs in a pan. Violet thanked him for putting up with her “crazy stories” and said she’d had a great time. He said he enjoyed her stories — “most of them” — and that he enjoyed the socks too.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 2 – Taste Jack Stallings
After their first date, Violet considered her next steps carefully. She hadn’t even uconsidered dating until very recently, more than a year after she had moved out. Starting a new life had been time consuming and exhausting. She had not been on a date since college and she certainly had no experience with dating apps or dating middle-aged men.
Violet & Jack: Chapter 1 – Meet Jack Stallings
Violet arrived a few minutes early and chose a low couch along the wall — a spot where she could see the door and steady her breathing. She hadn’t been on a first date in more than twenty‑five years. She wasn’t even sure this counted as one.
